biology major Dillion Linhart '14
relearning how to learn. Moved by the selflessness of those who helped him
recover and the generosity of the Saint Martin's community, Dillon has discovered his purpose in a commitment to others. At the 2013 Gala, Dillon shared the impact scholarships and this community has had in his life.
"By donating to scholarships, you help foster this community that never gives up on its students. Your acts of selflessness inspire students to go out into the world and make a difference. You believe enough to invest in us, and that will motivate us for the rest of our lives.
"I have committed myself to helping others and I hope to be
a part of the medical field one day; to exercise the same kind of selflessness
that I have benefitted from here at Saint Martin’s. I want to change a life,
just as you all are changing lives."

And the 2014 Saint Martin's Gala celebrity chef is…Lidia Bastianich!
The "grande dame" of Italian cooking, Lidia has long been regarded as one of America’s premier Italian chefs. In 1993, Julia Child invited Lidia to appear in an episode of her PBS series, Julia Child: Cooking With Master Chefs; in 1998 she became a regular contributor to public television cooking shows; in 2008 she was asked to prepare two special meals for Pope Benedict XVI's first trip as Pope to New York City; and in 2013 she won the Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Culinary Host” for
Lidia’s own kitchen has served as the stage set for all four of her television series — Lidia’s Italian-American Kitchen, Lidia’s Family Table, Lidia’s Italy, and, since 2011, Lidia’s Italy in America. Currently, Lidia is also hosting a series of hour-long PBS specials called
Lidia Celebrates America. Lida has written numerous cookbooks that accompany her television series, including:
La Cucina di Lidia,
Lidia’s Family Table,
Lidia’s Italy in America and
Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy.
She is co-owner of several Italian restaurants in
the U.S. In partnership with her son, Joe Bastianich,
and chef Mario Batali, she is part owner of
largest artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace in
New York City. The three also own
Felidia with her daughter,
Tanya Bastianich Manuali. In addition, Lidia is a
Lidia’s Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh,
Lidia’s Kansas City, in Kansas City,
Missouri. Lidia and her son produce award-winning
wines at Bastianich Vineyard in Friuli, Italy, and at La
Mozza Vineyard in Maremma, Italy.
An Italian immigrant and devoted Catholic, Lidia and her family arrived in North Bergan, New Jersey from Trieste, Italy when she was 12 years old, sponsored by Catholic Charities of New York. Says Lidia, “The Catholic Charities brought us here to New York; we had no one. They found a home for us. They found a job for my father. And ultimately we settled. And I am the perfect example that if you give somebody a chance, especially here in the United States, one can find the way.”
Lidia is actively involved in community service and is well known for giving freely of her time and knowledge. We are thrilled that she has chosen to share herself with Saint Martin's on behalf of our students.

Gala receipts benefit SMU scholarship funds
The Saint Martin’s Gala is a celebration of hospitality and
community. It's a time to see old friends, renew acquaintances,
savor delicious food and wine, and be entertained. But the
primary reason for our gathering is to support our students
educational journey through the advancement of scholarship
Scholarships are vital! They make it possible for hundreds of
students to attend Saint Martin’s every year. In this difficult
economy, as a college education grows increasingly out of reach
for ever more students and their families, scholarships help
make a degree from Saint Martin’s a reality for many. But, a
Saint Martin’s education is much more than a college diploma. It
is a unique experience that prepares individuals to take on
personal and professional challenges of the 21st century,
equipped with a set of ethics rooted in our Benedictine values.
Financial aid facts
- More than 95 percent of Saint Martin’s students
receive some form of financial assistance.
- In 2011-12, Saint Martin's University provided its
students with more than $10 million in the form of
grants, including individual and corporate donor-funded
scholarships, and the 2011 Gala Feed-a-Mind
- As a result, the Saint Martin’s student body
represents a rich diversity that distinguishes our
campus from many others across the nation. More than
one-third of our students come from underrepresented
populations, including first-generation college students
as well individuals from low-income families and
ethnically diverse backgrounds. Our University is one
where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
