Baseball: Saints edged out by Otters

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s baseball fell to Cal
State Monterey Bay 9-8 in the first game of a four game series Friday
afternoon at Saints Field.
Monterey Bay got to Saints’ pitcher Pat Capone early
in the game posting a four spot in the top of the second. Nick Zaballos
led off the inning with a double. The Otters then got four consecutive
hits before the Saints were able to put them away.
The Saints quickly responded in the bottom of the
third. They scored seven runs on five hits, getting two RBIs on a single
by Nate Baker and double by Seth Salinas.
The Otters tied the game at 7-7 in fifth scoring
three runs on four hits. The Saints regained the lead, 8-7, in the sixth
on a sacrifice fly by Craig Yuhas to score Vince Maughan.
Monterey Bay rallied in the seventh going ahead 9-7
on RBI doubles by Brian Trump and Benjamin Mayberry.
Cal State Monterey Bay outhit Saint Martin's 18-12.
Brian Trump led the way for the Otters going 4 for 4 with two RBIs and
two runs scored.
Baker, Yuhas and Curtis Thibault all had two hits
for SMU; with Baker and Yuhas driving in two runs each.
Shaun Busby picked up the win for the Otters while
Brett Efaw was tagged with the loss.
The series continues with a double header Saturday
at 11am at Saints Field.
