Baseball: Saints take one of three from Cal State Stanislaus

Lacey, WA – In a continuation of Saturday’s
suspended game Saint Martin’s fell to Cal State Stanislaus 3-0. The
Saints went on to pick up the win 2-1 in Sunday’s first full game but
lost 9-1 in the final game.
SMU started the suspended game in the bottom of the
seventh inning down 2-0. They got one runner on in each of the final
three innings but were unable to bring them around. CSUS, who got their
two runs in fourth, added one more in the eighth on an RBI single by A.J.
Valentine.
The Warriors were held to just six hits in the game
but the Saints had only five. Maki Smith, Adam Siler, Craig Yuhas, Vince
Maughan, and Andy Cole accounted for one hit each.
Pat Capone started on the mound for the Saints in
the first full game of the day. Capone threw all seven innings allowing
just one run on three hits while striking out four.
The Saints got their offense early, picking up both
of their runs in the first inning. With two on and two out Shane
Schoeneberg and Craig Yuhas hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Nate
Baker and Andrew Salinas.
Stanislaus picked up their only run in the fifth on
an RBI double by Josh Lewis.
Schoeneberg had two of the Saints’ five hits going
2-3 while Baker, Siler and Yuhas accounted for the other three.
The Saints again went up early in game two getting a
run in the first on a RBI single by Curtis Thibault. The Warriors picked
up one of their own in the third when Garrett Holtzen hit a double to
right to score Dennis Wolfe.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the
eighth when Stanislaus broke it wide open pouring on eight runs on six
hits. Wolfe led off with a walk followed by Kevin McCarthy who reached
on an error. Holtzen and Valentine both singled and Kyle Bonvechio
doubled to scoring three runs before the Saints recorded an out. They
would pick up four more on base hits by Lewis, Casey Filkins, and
McCarthy and the final two runs on a fielder’s choice and another Saint
error.
Ryan Morehouse threw all seven innings for the
Warriors to pick up the win. Andrew Neisinger, the Saints third pitcher
of the game, was tagged with the loss.
The Saints resume conference play next weekend with
a four game series against Western Oregon in Monmouth, OR.
