Baseball: Saints drop three of four to Wildcats

April 27, 2008

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s fell in three games of their four game series against Central Washington University losing 9-2 and 20-5 in Ellensburg on Saturday and falling 9-5 at home on Sunday before salvaging the last game with a 6-2 victory.

Nick Bolthouse held the Wildcats hitless through four innings before surrendering a bunt single in the fifth. He threw a complete game allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four.

The Saints broke it open in the sixth inning plating six runs on five hits and took advantage of two CWU errors. Craig Yuhas and Michael McIver both had RBI doubles while Luke Abbott and Corey Grayson each singled to drive in a run in the inning.

Shane Schoeneberg was the only player to pick up more than one hit in the game.

The Wildcats took the early 5-0 lead in game one before SMU battled their way back with two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to make it 5-4. But Central was able to get four runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull away.

Tom Barlow, Brandon Kuykendall and Carlo Ramirez had two hits apiece for the Saints.

Saturday’s games were all Central as the Wildcat offense came alive early and often. In game one they picked up eight runs in the first three innings and held the Saints scoreless until the seventh. Schoeneberg and Kuykendall scored SMU’s only runs.

Game two was much of the same as the Wildcats plated four runs in the first and three in the second before breaking it open with eight runs in the bottom of the third.

Saint Martin’s got two runs in the third on a RBI single by Nate Baker and a one run double by Barlow. They tacked on three more in the sixth as Schoeneberg singled through the right side to drive in a run and Baker doubled to left for two more.

Schoeneberg and Baker had three hits each for SMU while Barlow had two.

The Saints wrap up their season with a four game series against Western Oregon University May 3 and 4 at Saints Field.
