Baseball: Saints split on final day

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s rallied for a 3-2 victory
over Western Oregon an a 12 inning marathon then fell 6-1 in the
nightcap Sunday at Saints Field in their final two games of the season.
The Wolves managed just four hits in game one but
held onto a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 12th. With one out and
the bases loaded Shane Schoeneberg hit a high bouncer to the third
baseman who tried to get the force out at home but WOU’s catcher was
unable to keep his foot on the plate to score the tying run. The next
pitch hit batter Tanner Gronowski to force in the winning run.
Pat Capone threw a gem for the Saints going 11
innings and allowing just three hits while striking out six but ended up
with a no decision. Andrew Neisinger, who pitched the 12th inning,
earned the win.
Luke Abbott led the Saints with three hits while
Schoeneberg and Michael McIver had two each.
Schoeneberg tripled to start off game two then
scored on a single by Nate Baker to give the Saints the early 1-0
advantage. Western Oregon starter Greg Bobnick then closed the door
holding the Saints scoreless through the final six innings.
The Wolves got two runs each in the second, fifth,
and sixth innings for the win.
Schoeneberg had to hits and Baker had one to account
for the Saints’ hits in the game.
Saint Martin’s finishes their season 18-24 overall
and 14-16 in the GNAC.
