Eight Saint Martin's runners named to GNAC cross country academic team

Lacey, Wash. - A total of eight Saint Martin’s runners, five men and three woman, were selected to the 2002 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic all-star team announced yesterday.

Named to the women’s team were seniors Julie Thielen (Education, 4.00, Olympia, Wash.) and Amber Sommer (Education, 3.90, Twisp, Wash./Liberty HS) and sophomore Ann McCanick (Business, So., 3.45, Lakewood, Wash./Lakes HS).

For the men, seniors Rob Kemper (Business, 3.50, Amitty, Ore./Amitty HS) and Carlos Gonzales (Business, 3.23,Yakima, Wash,/Davis HS), juniors Nathan Carlson (Biology, 3.96, Pateros, Wash./Patersos HS) and Tyson Magney (Computer Science, 3.41, Spokane, Wash../Ferris HS) and sophomore Andy Prentice (Business, So., 3.25, Spokane, Wash./Lakeside HS) were all selected to the conference academic all-star team.

"They are all great kids," Saint Martin's coach Brad Hooper said. "They all have worked extremely hard on becoming the best athletes than can be, and they have hit the books just as hard. Nathan was an Academic All American in Track Last Season. Both, Amber and Tyson have received the honor 3 Times in Cross Country."

A total of 67 student-athletes, 38 men and 29 women, were named to the team. To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at the university.

Sixty-eight named to GNAC cross country academic team

Ellensburg, Wash. - A total of 67 student-athletes – 38 men and 29 women - have been named to the 2002 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic cross country all-conference team.

Heading up the women's academic team are Stacy Edwards (So., Eagle River, AK) of Alaska Anchorage and Julie Thielen (Sr., Olympia, WA) of Saint Martin’s. Among the men the top academic all-star is Will Smith (Sr., Canby) of Western Oregon. All three student-athletics have compiled perfect 4.00 GPAs during their academic careers.

Seattle Pacific placed the most athletes on the academic unit with 11, including seven men and four women. Alaska Anchorage (4 men, 5 women) and Western Oregon (6 men, 3 women) each placed nine athletes on the academic all-star team.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
