Saints' top runner collapses at race

November 18, 2002

THE OLYMPIAN Wednesday, November 13, 2002

Saint Martin's top runner Nate Carlson collapsed with about 80 meters left while running a 10-kilometer course at the NCAA Division II regional cross country event in Fresno, Calif.

Carlson, the Saints top runner all season, took nearly eight minutes to cover the final 80 meters and finished 112th out of 133 runners with a time of 41 minutes and 22 seconds. He dropped from 45th place.

"It was scary," coach Brad Hooper said. "We think it was an allergic reaction. We don't think it was a hydration problem."

Carlson will undergo tests to determine what caused him to collapse. He spent seven hours in the hospital after the race.

Chris Carpenter was Saint Martin's top finisher as he placed 72nd in 35:50, running on a course that turned mucky by several days of rain. The Saints' Andy Prentice was 78th in 36:21, Matt Gage was 102nd in 39:28 and Rob Kemper was 118th in 43:33.

Saint Martin's placed 15th out of 28 teams. Central Washington was 12th.

"We were hoping to beat Central for the first time," Hooper said. "We would have if Nate hadn't run into trouble."

Saint Martin's had women compete. They were led by Ann McCanick's 25:07 for the 6,000-meter race, good for 81st. Julie Thielen was 88th in 25:20, Nicole Beatty was 105th in 26:28, and Amber Sommer was 130th in 32:43.
