MEN CONQUER ALL AT CLARK INVITATIONAL, WOMEN FINISH 6TH IN THE WIND AND RAIN

October 15, 2003

The SMC men's cross country team took 1st place, and the women took 6th, in the 12-team Clark College (Vancouver, WA) Invitational on Saturday.  The elements added drama to an event that Coach Brad Hooper described as "...a totally mushy, rainy, and windy day."  As if the weather wasn't enough, the course featured "...the hardest hill I have ever seen at a cross country meet: 300 meters straight-up." according to Hooper.

Scoring for the men were team captain Nathan Carlson (Sr.) who placed 3rd at 25:57, Junior Andy Prentice (4th, 26:01), Freshman Tris Obluck (5th, 26:10), Freshman Seth Woods (18th, 27:37), and Sophomore Vic Carpenter (27th, 28:18).  Carlson made his second top-three finish of the year as the Saints earned their first team victory of the season.  The men are currently ranked 9th in the Pacific Region.

The lady Saints were led by Junior Kendra Steinbrugger who finished 16th with a time of 20:15 and Nicole Beatty who finished in 20:21 for 20th place.  "The women raced real aggressively and had an outstanding day." according to Hooper.

Saint Martin's Cross Country returns to the South Sound this weekend to compete in the Evergreen Invite on Saturday, October 18th.
