Men take team title at home invite, Lady Saints claim second

September 27, 2004

Andy Prentice won the individual title while leading the Saints men's team to first place in the Saint Martin's Invitational held on campus Saturday.  Saints women, led by Janelle Probst's fifth position, took second behind an impressive Seattle University team.

Prentice covered the men's 8,000 meter course in a time of 26:10, five seconds ahead of John Riak, who was competing unattached. Tris Obluck's time of 27:05 positioned second for the Saints and eighth overall.  Saint Martin's finished with a team score of 48. Western Washington finished second in the six-team competition with 55 points.

The Saints men debuted the season ranked 10th in the NCAA, Division II West Region.  Early success was recently recognized with a bump to seventh in the poll.  Saturday's victory over sixth ranked Western may propel them even higher.

In the women's race, Probst led Saint Martin's with a 5,000 meter time of 19:19.  The Redhawks, led by Kelly Fullerton's first place mark of 18:04 (a full 47 seconds ahead of runner-up Stitges Marshall of Highline), placed five runners in the Top 10, however, to finish ahead of the Saints (22-50).

The Saints travel to Salem, Oregon on Saturday to take part in the Willamette Invitational.
