Riak and Probst set course and school records as Saints sweep Geoducks

September 13, 2005

LACEY—On Friday, Sept 9th, the Saints competed in a dual meet with Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.

The men’s team edged the Geoducks with a score of 26-29, despite not having their #2 runner Robbie Wilbur, who sat out with an injury. John Riak (Fr., Lacey, WA) followed his Great Northwest Athletic Conference Male Runner-of-the-Week performance from a week ago, with yet another outstanding run. Riak finished in 1st place with a time of 15:06 for the men’s 5,000 meter race, setting a course and school record in the process. Seth Woods (Jr., Lacey, WA) finished in 4th place with a personal best of 16:13. Steven Lalonde (So., Centralia, WA) also recorded a personal best of 16:24 good enough for 7th place, and Tris O’Bluck (Jr., Mukawango, WI) finished in 8th place with a mark of 16:47. Caleb Timmer (Jr., Tacoma, WA) ran a personal best of 17:03.

The women’s team routed Evergreen 43-16. The Saints were led by the 1st place finish of Janelle Probst (So., Spokane, WA) covering the women’s 5,000 meter layout in a time of 18:36, setting a course and school record with her first-class performance. Kaleigh Bishop (So., Stanwood, WA) followed behind Probst with a mark of 18:59. Head Coach Brad Hooper states, “Kaleigh had an awesome day. She broke the old school record with her mark. In fact, Kaleigh has never broken the 20 minute barrier for a 5K race in Cross Country, so she just jumped over the 19 minute area and went straight to the 18 minute area.” Nicole Beatty (Sr., Port Angeles, WA) finished in 4th with a time of 20:11, while Jessica Pendon (Fr., Spanaway, WA) rounded out the Top 5 with a mark of 20:34. Chelsi Claussen competed in her first Cross Country race ever, finishing in 7th place with a mark of 22:05.

The team races again Friday, Sept. 16th in the National Catholic Cross Country Championships in South Bend, Indiana, followed by Saint Martin’s only home meet of the year on Saturday, Sept. 24th on our very own SMU campus. Be sure to come out and support your Saints’ harriers!!!
