Cross Country: Saints host GNAC Championship Meet

Lacey, WA (October 21) – Saint Martin’s University
played host to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country
Championship Meet held Saturday on the SMU campus.
For Saint Martin’s the women finished seventh as a
team, their best finish ever, while the men’s team finished sixth.
Almost every runner for the Saints improved their time or ran a PR for
the course.
Individually, John Riak finished fourth with a time
of 25:07, running his best time on the course and earning him
all-conference honors. Jessie Dunnam was the highest finisher for the
women placing 28th with a time of 23:45, 50 seconds faster then her
previous time.
Other runners on the women’s side included Amy
Layton who finished with a time of 23:53 in 32nd place. Kaleigh Bishop
finished 47th with a time of 24:32. Krinda Carlson came in 50th at
24:43, 1:55 faster. Taylor Shipman placed 54th with a time of 24:48
while Jessica Pendon improved her time by 1:32 to finish 64th at 25:48.
Chelsi Claussen came in 67th with a time of 26:40.
For the men, Niwar Nasim finished 36th with a time
of 26:38, 1:09 faster. Josh Gatbunton came in 46th at 27:16, improving
his time by 1:12. Robbie Wilbur finished 53rd and Tristan Beach finished
54th with times of 27:46 and 27:51 respectively. Steven La Londe
finished the race in 27:57 to put him 56th while Asiki Ayume placed 62nd
with a time of 28:29. Kevin Tober and Brian Gerry finished 75th and 76th
with Tober posting a time of 32:12 and Gerry finishing in 33:48.
David Kiplagat of Alaska Anchorage and Jessica
Pixler of Seattle Pacific won individual titles. Kiplagat won the men’s
8k race in a time of 24:28.27. Kiplagat's time was the second fastest in
meet history. Pixler won the women's title in a time of 21:11, three
seconds quicker than Mandy Kaempf of Alaska Anchorage. Pixler's time is
the quickest in the six-year history of the women's meet.
Seattle Pacific beat out Alaska Anchorage 34-44 to
earn its third women’s team title in the past four years. Western
Washington ran away with the men's team title. The Vikings had four of
the top eight finishers and seven among the top 13 to outpoint UAA
35-53.
Pixler earned GNAC Athlete-of-the-Year and
Freshman-of-the-Year honors with her first-place finish, while Katie
Hummel of Central Washington was selected the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year
Kiplagat earned GNAC Athlete-of-the-Year honors by
virtue of his first-place finish, while Trevor Kulvi of Central
Washington was named the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year. Cale McCullogh of
Western Washington was selected the GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year
