Cross Country: Riak takes first; women post strong finish

Redmond, WA – John Riak finished first in the men’s
four mile race while the Saints’ women finished second as a team at the
Northwest University Invite at Marymoor Park Friday.
Riak took the lead in the second half of the race
beating Central Washington’s Sam Scotchmer with a time of 19:37. The men
as a team finished fourth overall.
Steven La Londe ran a 21:42 to finish 20th while
Tris Obluck finished 22nd at 21:51. Nick Harvey and Josh Gatbunton came
in 35th and 39th with times of 22:18 and 22:55 respectively. Bryan Gerry
ran a 25:07 and Kevin Tober a 26:16.
The Saints’ women’s team finished second just one
point behind Central Washington, ranked fifth in the West Region
pre-season poll, with 36 to the Wildcats 35. Freshman Annie Laweryson
led the Saints with a solid third place finish behind to former national
qualifiers from CWU.
Krinda Carlson finished fourth at 18:31 while Jesse
Dunnam took fifth with a time of 18:36. Helen Camden came in sixth with
Kaleigh Bishop finishing 21st with times of 18:41 and 19:48
respectively.
Karissa Owen ran a time of 20:33 to finish 27th.
Ninalynn Benitez came in with a time of 21:01 and Jessica Pendon posted
a 21:58.
“Annie ran a race befitting an upper classman,” said
head coach Julie Sullivan. “This was very exciting for our women; they
have never done anything quite like this before.”
The next meet for the Saints will be next Saturday
when they travel to Seattle to take part in the UW Sundodger Meet.
