Cross Country: Saints split ranks, take part in two different meets

October 7, 2007

The Saint Martin’s cross country team mixed things up this weekend, sending their top three men to Bellingham to compete in the WWU Viking Classic while the rest of the team headed to Evergreen State College to run in the Pete Steilberg Open.

At the WWU Invite John Riak finished third with a time of 32:32.10 while Tris Obluck ran a 34:39.80 and Steven La Londe a 35:17.20, two minutes faster then his previous best.

“I am excited for John, who has good team back-up; Tris who is approaching his 2003 form and Steven in his senior year realizing his potential,” said head coach Julie Sullivan. “The performances of these three harkened back to the good old days where their collective times have been bettered only once in SMU history.”

Together the three combined for a time of 1:42.28. The school best, set by Obluck, Andy Prentice and Nate Carlson in 2003, is 1:41.36.

Over at the Evergreen meet Jessie Dunnam put together a great race to finish 16th with a time of 19:22.05. She was only the second runner from a non-Canadian school to cross the finish. Annie Laweryson finished second for the Saints with a time of 19:55.31. Helen Camden cut her way through the field to finish 32nd at 20:04.50 and Krinda Carlson, running in her first race in three weeks, was the Saints’ fourth finisher with a time of 20:27.25. Kaleigh Bishop posted a time of 21:29.03 while Ninalynn Benitez finished in 22:05.67. Karissa Owen and Jessica Pendon finished the race with times of 22:27.67 and 23:26.39 respectively. As a team the women finished fourth behind the three Canadian teams.

On the men’s side Josh Gatbunton led the way with and 18th place finish in 27.12. Nick Harvey posted a time of 28:44 while Kevin Tober finished in 33:02.

Next up for the Saints is the GNAC Championship hosted by Northwest Nazarene University on October 20th.
