FANFARE Saints' Prentice 3rd at nationals
March 12, 2006
Not often does an accomplished runner call another
runner's success the highlight of his career.
But that's what Saint Martin's University track
coach Brad Hooper did Saturday after Andy Prentice finished third in the
800 meters during the NCAA Div. II indoor finals in Boston.
Prentice came within a whisker of winning the race,
crossing the line just behind winner and defending champion Nick Lara of
Adams St. (Colorado) and Steve Ludwick of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Prentice finished in 1 minute, 52.66 seconds,
two-tenths of a second behind Lara and a tenth of a second behind
Ludwick.
"This is the most excited I've ever been in track
and field," said Hooper. "It's the highlight of my coaching career, by
far.
"I almost had a heart attack. They almost had to
take me out on a stretcher."
Prentice also qualified to run in the 1,500 meters,
but Hooper scratched him because "He had a chance of winning the 800, or
at least being in the top three.
"He was in control the whole time. He put himself in
a position to win, and he almost snuck up and beat the defending
champion. Awesome."
