Track and Field: Riak conference champion at GNAC Championship Meet

May 6, 2006

Monmouth, OR --- John Riak (Fr., Lacey, WA) set a new school record (31:42.1) en route to winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship in the 10,000m at the fifth annual GNAC track-and-field championship meet at MacArthur Field on the campus of Western Oregon University Saturday.

“John ran a perfect race. We sat down earlier in the week and devised a race plan, and John ran it perfectly. In the second 5K John put almost 50 seconds on the rest of the runners,” said Saints head coach Brad Hooper.

Riak also placed fifth in the 5,000m in a time of 15:17.32.

Josh Timmer (So., Tacoma, WA) broke his own school record in running 55.12 in the 400m Hurdles, narrowly missing the conference crown by .01 seconds. Josh also placed fourth in the 110m Hurdles (15.98), again breaking his own school record.

Caleb Timmer (So., Tacoma, WA) finished in third place with a personal best time of 1:55.22 in the 800m.

The men placed fourth in the 4x400m relay (Josh Timmer, Asiki Ayume, Caleb Timmer, Bryan Gerry) in a school record time of 3:24.05.

On the women’s side, Chelsi Claussen (So., Shelton, WA) placed second in the 400m Hurdles (1:03.49), just missing a national qualifying time by .19 seconds.

“She stumbled a little on a hurdle and had to run a bunch of ladies down. She just missed winning the race at the tape,” said Hooper.

Claussen also finished second in the 100m (12.67).

Janelle Probst (So., Spokane, WA) placed fifth in the 10,000m race in a time of 40:36.96. Lakita Burr (Jr., Lakewood, WA) finished seventh in the 400m Hurdles (1:07.29). Jessie Dunnam (So., Kelso, WA) placed seventh in the 5,000m with a :35 personal best time of 18:58.05.
