Track: Saints win four in a row

Tacoma, WA (March 10) – For the first time in school history the Saint Martin’s track and field team won four races in a row, taking all four heats of the 1500m, at the Joe Peyton Invitational at Baker Stadium Saturday.

Krinda Carlson started things off in the first heat of the women’s 1500m and timed her finish perfectly to smash the school record by four seconds with a time of 4:56.63. In heat two Amy Layton led from the gun winning with a time of 5:05.66, a new PR.

Then it was the guys turn. John Riak took heat one leading from start to finish in 4:02.21. The second heat saw Robbie Wilbur storm through on the final lap to take the win with a PR of 4:14.08.

Jennifer Grover also ran in the second heat of the 1500m and finished with a new PR of 4:02.21. On the men’s side Josh Gatbunton and Caleb Timmer posted times of 4:08.17 and 4:19.33 respectively in the 1500m.

A second school record was set by Jessie Dunnam in the women’s 5k with a time of 18:32.83, a new PR. Taylor Shipman and Katelynn Blume also posted PRs in the race. Shipman ran a 20:13.23 and Blume a 21:35.41.

Aaron Edwards also picked up a win in the men’s long jump at 6.28m, took fourth in the high jump at 1.80m, and sixth in the 100m with a time of 11.65. In his first competition for the Saints, Devin Sturgeon came close to a school record in the shot with a distance of 10.91m. He also threw the javelin 31.10m. Other PRs on the men’s side came from Brian Daltoso, Niwar Nasim and Steven LaLonde. Daltoso ran the 200m in 25.16. Both Nasim and LaLonde took part in the 5k finishing with times of 16:02.32 and 16:44.92 respectively.

Other athletes competing for the Saints included Bryan Gerry in the 400m (52.53) and 200m (23.66), Asiki Ayume in the 800m (2:01.39) and 200m (23.87), Tristan Obluck in the 3000m steeplechase (10:38.75), Tristan Beach in the 5k (17:00.31), Kevin Tober in the 400m hurdles (1:15.75), Chelsi Claussen in the 100m (13.18), Jessica Pendon in the 800m (2:31.81), and Danika Washington in the shot ( 7.97m).

In the women’s 4 x 100m relay Claussen, Pendon, Grover and Kaleigh Bishop finished with a time of 53.94. On the men’s side Daltoso, Gerry, Tober and Edwards finished in 47.45. Gerry, Ayume, Gatbunton, and Timmer ran the men’s 4 x 400m in 3:32.02.

The next meet for the Saints will be the PLU Meet on March 17th.
