Women’s Basketball: Saints fall just short of win
November 8, 2006
Olympia, WA – Saint Martin's University fell three
points short of recording a win in their first game losing to Evergreen
State College 55-52 Tuesday night at the Evergreen Gymnasium. It was
Evergreen’s first win in the 11 year series.
The Saints jumped ahead early taking a 10-8 lead
before Evergreen went on a 16-5 run giving them the 24-15 lead with just
under 8:00 minutes left in the half. Evergreen then hit a wall going
0-12 from the field the rest of the half. Despite the poor shooting the
Geoducks were able to maintain their lead going into the break, 26-21.
Evergreen came back hard to open the second half
with a 9-0 run to take a 36-22 lead. The Saints battled back posting
their own 21-3 run to go up 43-39 with eight minutes left. Both teams
continued to post 10-point runs throughout the half. Down 54-52 in the
final seconds Saint Martin’s stole the inbounds pass twice but couldn’t
capitalize.
Junior forward Sade Smith led the Saints with 14
points. The Saints starting five combined for 33 points in the game.
They were able to get some quality minutes from their bench as well.
The Saints travel to Belmont, CA November 17 and 18
to take part in the Notre Dame de Namur Tournament where they will face
Cal-State Los Angeles and Grand Canyon University.
