Women’s Basketball: Saints comeback falls short against Western
Washington

Lacey, WA – Jamey Gelhar scored a game high 30
points for the Saints, 19 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as
the Saints fell to Western Washington University 88-78 in the Great
Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Saint Martin’s got off to a rough start in the first
half as Western built their lead to 12 before the Saints scored their
first two points on free throws by Gelhar. The Vikings maintained their
decisive lead going up by as much as 21 twice, the last with just over
four minutes left in the half. Saint Martin’s went into the break
trailing by 14, 42-28.
The Saints came out fighting to open the second half
with an 11-4 run to pull within 7, 46-39 with 16:55 remaining. With just
over 12 minutes to go the Saints cut Western’s lead to two on a jumper
by Krissy Bassett. The Vikings hit five three-pointers over the next
four minutes and got their lead to 10. The Saints never got closer then
five the rest of the way.
The Saints scored 31 point off of 28 Viking
turnovers but got edged out on the boards 35-25.
Gelhar was 8-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-4
from three-point range, and made 12-of-13 free throws. Whitney Golob put
up 16 points for the Saints going 8-8 from the line with six steals.
Western Washington, ranked 23rd in the latest USA
Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25, had five players in double figures including
Liz McCarrell, Mollie Stelmack, Claire Pallansch, Sarah Schramm and
Willow Cabe.
The Saints get set to face Central Washington this
Saturday, January 6th, in GNAC action at the SMU Pavilion at 5 p.m.
