Women’s Basketball: Saints stay close but lose to Nanooks

Fairbanks, AK (February 1) – The Saint Martin’s
women’s basketball team had four players in double figures but it wasn’t
enough as they fell to the University of Alaska Fairbanks 80-75 Thursday
night at the Patty Center.
Sade Smith posted a game high 24 points and added
eight rebounds. Jamey Gelhar had 14 points going 9 for 10 from the free
throw line. Amber Harmon and Jessi Reome put up 13 and 10 points
respectively. Whitney Golob pulled down a game high 13 rebounds.
With just over 14 minutes left to play in the first
half the Saints went on a 13 point run and held the Nanooks scoreless
for nearly five minutes to open up a 12 point lead 23-11. The Saints
would go up by as much as 14 before the Nanooks battled their way back
to pull within two going into halftime down 38-36.
Fairbanks got the first two buckets of the second
half to go ahead by three. That would be the last lead change of the
game as the Nanooks were able to maintain the advantage over the Saints
the rest of the way. Fairbanks got up by as much as 10 in the half and
the Saints got within two a total of four times but couldn’t regain the
lead.
The Nanooks had four players in double figures on
the night. Caitlyn Rohrbach posted a double-double with 20 points and 10
rebounds.
The Saints have one more game in Alaska before
returning home. They get set to face the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves this
Saturday night.
