January 26, 2008

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s held Western Washington to their lowest point total in 31 one years as they defeated the Vikings 54-37 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday night at the SMU Pavilion.

The Vikings were held scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes of the game, missing their first seven shots and committing six turnovers before finally getting on the board with 13:20 left in the half. Western hit just five of 24 shots and trialed 20-14 at the break.

The Saints allowed Western to score just six points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, capped off by a 15-2 run to give SMU a 23 point lead.

Saint Martin’s would extend their lead to as much as 26 at the 4:46 mark before WWU scored 12 of the game’s last 15 points to account for the final.

“We played better on defense tonight to make up for our offense. We had a lot of shots that weren’t falling but we picked it up on the other end,” said Amber Harmon.

The Vikings finished the game shooting 25 percent fro the field, 38.1 percent from the free throw line. Saint Martin’s shot just 30.5 percent on the night and was 14 of 23 from the line.

Harmon led the Saints with a game high 14 points and added four steals. Dara Zack had eight points and pulled down a game high 16 rebounds.

“Our team worked well together tonight,” said Dara Zack. “We had a lot of good production and got some quality performances from the bench.”

Western, who drops to 4-15 overall and 1-6 in conference, did not have a player in double figures. They were led by Amanda Dunbar with nine points.

SMU improves to 11-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference.

The Saints are on the road next week as they head to Seattle University to face off against the Redhawks.
