Women’s Basketball: Saints roll past Wolves

Monmouth, OR – Saint Martin’s got solid performances
off the bench in the first half on their way to a 73-53 victory in Great
Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday night at the New PE
Building.
Western Oregon built up a 9-4 to open the game but
the Saints answered back with a 14-2 run to take the 18-11 advantage.
Krissy Bassett and Roni Jo Mielke came off the bench to put in eight
points apiece during a stretch in which the Saints outscored the Wolves
32-8.
SMU finished out the first half with a 15-3 run to
take a 36-17 lead into the break.
The Saints continued to add to their lead in the
second half going up by as much as 25 before settling at the 20 point
final margin.
Saint Martin’s had four players in double figures,
including a team high 13 from Bassett. Sade Smith added 12 points and
six rebounds while Kassie Ludeman and Mielke had 10 each.
Leada Berkey led Western Oregon with a game high 14
points while Sara Zahler added 10 points.
The Saints got 37 points from the bench and
capitalized with 29 points off of WOU turnovers.
With the victory SMU improves to 14-5 overall and to
7-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. It was the fourth
consecutive win for the Saints, who are ranked eighth in the latest NCAA
Division II west region poll. Western Oregon drops to 5-14 on the season
and to 1-9 in conference.
The Saints return home next week to face the
University of Alaska Fairbanks Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion.
