Women’s Golf: Two high school senior standout
golfers to become Saints
December 5, 2005
LACEY --- Saint Martin's University women's head
golf coach Bob Grisham announced the signing of two high school seniors
to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Saints next fall will be
Lauren Roberts from Allyn and Destiny Schang from Woodland.
Roberts, a senior at 3A North Mason High School, is
a two-time first-team all-Nisqually all-star. Roberts, the 2005
Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship Long Drive
Champion, carries an eight handicap with an 18-hole average of 81. As a
junior, she was named Kitsap Sun “Athlete of the Week” and voted most
valuable player and team captain for the Bulldogs. As a sophomore, she
was first-team all-Nisqually and second-team all-Nisqually as a
freshman.
“Lauren is an extremely hard worker who has
consistently improved with each year. She will bring a tremendous amount
of tournament experience to the program,” said Grisham. “Her skill,
ability, and determination will undoubtedly help our program continue to
improve our level of competitiveness.”
Schang, a senior at Woodland High School, earned
first team all-Trico honors for the league and district-champion Beavers
this fall.
Schang is also a standout basketball player at
Woodland. She will be a dual sport athlete at Saint Martin’s, as she
plans to participate on the Saints women’s basketball team as well.
“Destiny is a very successful athlete, evidenced in
her ability to excel in both golf and basketball. I look forward to her
making a successful transition to SMU while participating in both golf
and basketball,” said Grisham. “With continued hard work and practice,
Destiny’s golf game has a very bright upside.”
Schang earned first-team all-Trico and all-area last
season as she led the Beavers to the Trico League and District
Championship, averaging 12.6 points a game. Schang was second among all
Class 2A players in the state in assists and steals a season ago.
The Saints start the spring portion of their
schedule on March 26-28 at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational at the
Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, AZ.
