Women’s Golf: Saints compete at Grand Canyon Invitational, Henden finishes in top 20

Goodyear, AZ --- The Saint Martin's University women’s golf team finished 16th at the 17-team Grand Canyon University Invitational Tournament which concluded Tuesday in Goodyear, Arizona.

The Saints knocked five strokes off their first-day score with a final-round 346 at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club and finished the 36-hole tournament with a 697 total.

Western Washington, ranked No.3 in the National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Poll, defended its tournament title by shooting a final-round 309 for a 36-hole total of 615. That was five strokes better than runner-up St. Mary's TX (312=620). Tied for third at 621 were Northeastern State OK (310) and St. Edwards TX (309).

The Saints were led by Stacie Henden (So., Allyn, WA) who rounded out the top 20 in medalist play at 157 (77), while Maria Laraisse (Jr., Agadir, Morocco) tied for 42nd at 162 (80). Bridget Kennedy (So., Olympia, WA) finished at 181 (91), Liza Bornasal (Fr., Pomeroy, WA) finished at 197 (98) and Leah-Marie Whitman (Jr., Edmonds, WA) finished at 208 (100).

Central Oklahoma's Ashley Kelley took medalist honors, winning in a playoff with Grand Canyon's Jessica McKay, after each finished at 1-under 143. Kelley drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to capture the tournament title.
