Women’s Soccer: Saints lose home opener
August 27,
2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s picked up their first
goal in the history of the program but it wasn’t enough as Hawaii Hilo
sent three into the net to secure the 3-1 win Monday afternoon at the
Regional Athletic Complex.
The Vulcans took the early lead picking up their
first goal just over two minutes into the game. The Saints quickly
answered back tying the game on a shot by Kayci Donatelli just five
minutes later.
The defense stepped it up as neither team was able
to score for over 57 minutes. The Vulcans would use goals by Karissa
Robertson and Megan Pachecano in the second half to secure the win.
Robertson scored 20 minutes into the second half while Pachecano added
the insurance run with just two minutes left in the game.
“It was an absolute delight to see Kayci score our
first ever goal. It was great the way the women pushed forward in the
first half. Our issues are all little things that we’ve got to solve
under the pressure of games,” said head coach Rob Walker. “Experience is
the key. Our situation is very much like that of a person who has to
open the car door quickly and can’t get the key to work.”
SMU was out-shot 28-10 on the day. Ashley Biral got
off four shots for SMU while Jessica Wilson added two. Breanna Klasen
and Michelle Donachie split time in the goal and combined for nine saves
in the game.
“Jessica needs to be singled out for her play in
midfield as does Julianna Sackeyfio in back and up front and Trisha
Halvorson for steadying play in back,” added Walker. “Additionally,
Amber Pratt showed that she can be really effective playing and
attacking out of the back.”
The team heads to California to take on Humboldt
University Thursday afternoon.
