College of Education and Counseling Psychology minors

We offer four minors including a minor in education, physical education, reading and special education. Completing a minor in the education department does not satisfy the state requirements for teacher certification.

For a minor in education students must apply for acceptance before enrolling in any upper-division coursework. Students must meet the same requirements as those applying for a major in education.

Education

To obtain a minor in education you must complete 19-20 semester hours. Below is a list of the courses you must complete:

Lower-division courses (6 semester hours) include:

ED 204 - Introduction to education

ED 205 - Child and adolescent development

Upper-division courses (13-14 semester hours) include:

SED 359 - Introduction to exceptionality

ED 306 - Curriculum and instruction

ED 383 - Issues of abuse/teacher as counselor

Select two courses from the follow list:

ED 360 - Classroom management

ED 370 - Classroom assessment

Physical education

To obtain a minor in physical education you must complete 19-20 semester hours. Below is a list of the courses you must complete:

Lower-division courses, select two semester hours from the follow list:

PE 202

PE 203

PE 204

Upper-division courses (17 semester hours) including:

PE 301

PE 310

PE 345

PE 400

PE 401

Reading

To obtain a minor in reading you must complete 21-24 semester hours. Below is a list of the courses you must complete:

Upper-division courses:

ED 419 - Method of teaching language arts

ED 438 - Literature for children and young adults

ED 474 - Primary reading/writing

ED 475 - Reader-writer workshop

ED 479 - Reading practicum

ED 481 - Issues and trends in literacy instruction

Choose one of the following upper-division courses:

ED 476 - Content-area reading for elementary teachers

ED 485 - Content-area reading for secondary teachers

Choose one of the following upper-division courses:

ED 477 - Reading diagnosis

ED 482 - Reading assessment/intervention secondary

Special education

To obtain a minor in special education you must complete 21 semester hours. Below is a list of the courses you must complete:

Upper-division courses (21 semester hours):

SED 359 - Instruction to exceptionality

SED 461 - Instructional methods of exceptional learners

SED 463 - Management strategies for exceptional learners

SED 465 - Transition to adulthood for exceptional learners

SED 466 - Assessment in exceptional learners

SED 467 - Legal issues and the IFSP/IEP

SED 469 - Seminar and practicum in special education
