Students with academic honors

Students achieving a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40 throughout their entire collegiate career, receive academic honors upon graduation. Honors are distinguished by the award of an honor cord presented during commencement proceedings. The cord, which is draped around the neck of the gown, distinguishes the level of honor received.

Bronze cord   Cum laude
Cumulative grade point average of 3.40 to 3.59
Silver cord   Magna cum laude
Cumulative grade point average of 3.60 to 3.79
Gold cord   Summa cum laude
Cumulative grade point average of 3.80 to 4.00

Some students also will wear the medallion of the Society of Fellows, the University’s honor society. Students who are nominated for the society are inducted once specific academic criteria established by the Society is met. The Society of Fellows was founded in 1971 to distinguish members of the student body and faculty who, by their outstanding work in teaching and learning, contribute to the intellectual life of the University.
