Saint Martin’s University warmly welcomes Douglas M. Astolfi, Ph.D., who became the University’s president July 1, 2005. A longtime college administrator and history professor, he is Saint Martin’s eighth president, succeeding David R. Spangler, Ph.D. Astolfi’s academic career has included many colleges and universities similar to Saint Martin’s. He came to Saint Martin’s from Florida’s Saint Leo University, where his leadership as academic vice president was instrumental in transforming Saint Leo into an institution noted for its academic quality, financial stability and innovation. At Saint Leo since 1997, Astolfi oversaw the university’s academic schools, divisions and programs. He was instrumental in securing a $300,000 Freeman Foundation grant to develop a university economic development center and a center for entrepreneurial studies in partnership with China’s Changchun University of Science and Technology. He also was successful in obtaining several grants crucial for technological advances for faculty and the university’s academic programs. Astolfi previously served as vice president of academic affairs at Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., and dean of the undergraduate college at Clark University, Worcester, Mass. Among his other administrative posts was directorship of the National University Continuing Education Association/National Endowment for the Humanities. Astolfi has a doctorate in history from Northern Illinois University. He earned his master’s in history at The University of Rochester and his bachelor’s in history from Tufts University. He attended Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management in 1991. While at Saint Leo, a fellow Benedictine university, Astolfi became familiar with the social, intellectual and ethical values of the Catholic Benedictines and the great educational and community strengths they support. He says: “Saint Martin’s deep commitment to its rich Benedictine traditions, coupled with the community’s dedication to offer every student a practical, liberal arts-based education, provides a strong foundation on which we can build. I am committed to excellent, accessible education, and to advancing Saint Martin’s quality and reputation in Washington and beyond.” Astolfi and Elizabeth “Betsy” Shields Astolfi, his wife, have three children: Andrew, Christopher and Margaret.
