Women’s Soccer: Saints hold off Wildcats for the win
September 4, 2008
Lacey, WA – Cal State Chico tied the game at 2-2
with just under ten minutes to go but Saint Martin’s answered back less
than two minutes later to regain the lead and earn the victory Thursday
afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Bree Klasen scored the winning goal in the 82nd
minute off a cross from Amanda Zueger. Jessica Wilson also picked up an
assist on the goal.
The Saints took the early lead as Ashley Biral
scored at the 11 minute mark on an assist by Jill Jensen. Jensen picked
up her second assist in the 28th minute as keeper Ashley Engel sent a
goal kick down field to her where Jensen passed it off to Zueger who
sent it off the left post into the goal. SMU would take their 2-0 lead
into the break.
Chico, who got off just two shots in the first half,
came roaring back in the second half with 10 shots and got on the board
at the 62:08 mark as Melissa Lindsay sent a cross to Ashley Perlman for
the goal. Lindsay then tied the game in the 80th minute off a cross from
Katie McIntosh.
“We showed glimmers of who we want to be today. We
scored a couple of great goals had had some other really good chances.
Chico is a quality team with a long history of success in the West,”
said head coach Rob Walker. “What it came down to was grit and
determination. We held on for the win and when you’re young like us that
is really the way we have to learn to play. Overall, I’m very proud of
our kids.”
Saint Martin’s outshot the Wildcats, ranked 16th
nationally, 15-12. Engel spent the entire game in goal for the Saints
and had seven saves.
The Saints, now 2-0, are back in action again
tomorrow as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11am at the RAC.
