Women’s Soccer: Saints suffer first loss

September 5, 2008

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s tried to rally against Cal State Dominguez Hills but it was too little, too late as they lost 3-2 to the 24th ranked Toros Friday morning at the Regional Athletic Complex.

CSUDH got on the board just nine minutes in as Jessica Murphy split a pair of SMU defenders and sent a shot into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Saints answered back exactly two minutes later as Jill Jensen scored her second goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.

The Toros regained the lead in the 66th minute as Murphy sent a cross to Kelly Matosain who sent it into the back of the net. CSUDH would add insurance five minutes later on an unassisted goal from Melanie DeSalvo.

Saint Martin’s pulled to within one at the 80:34 mark as Kayci Donatelli scored off a cross from Amanda Zueger, but that was as close as the Saints would get as Dominguez Hills held on for the win.

Saint Martin’s was outshot 25-11 in the contest. Ashley Engel had 10 saves in goal for SMU.

“It’s great to be competitive with a top team in the West like CSUDH. We had our moments today; I’m pleased with some of the things we did to try to adjust and battle back,” said head coach Rob Walker.

The Saints have a short break before travelling to Canada to face Simon Fraser University Tuesday the 9th.
