Women’s Soccer: Saints lose in OT
September 14,
2008
Walla Walla, WA – Kandis Jarvis scored in the 63rd
minute to tie the game for Saint Martin’s and send the game into
overtime but Whitman found the goal just five minutes into the extra
period to take the 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic
Fields.
The Missionaries struck first scoring in the 27th
minute as Jennifer Doane scored from 15 yards out on an assist from Amy
Hasson.
The score would remain the same through half until
Jarvis scored at the 63:45 mark, sending the ball into the right corner
from 10 yards out to force the overtime period.
Whitman’s Libby Watkins triggered the game-winning
play by threading a pass toward the top of the box. Corina Gabbert got
her foot on the ball at the same time as Saint Martin's goalkeeper
Ashley Engel slid in front for the block. The ball popped loose and
Gabbert was there to knock in the rebound, giving the Missionaries the
win.
“We didn’t play well in the first half but it was
much better in the second half. They put in a lot of hard work and
effort to equalize things,” said head coach Rob Walker. “It was a tough
way to lose a hard fought game.”
Michelle Donachie spent the first half in goal for
the Saints tallying three saves. Ashley Engel played the final 50
minutes in goal with five saves before allowing the winning goal.
The Saints play their first conference game of the
season Saturday, September 20th at Central Washington University.
