Women’s Soccer: Saints down Wildcats in final minutes

September 20, 2008

Ellensburg, WA – Jill Jensen scored twice in the second half, including once in the final minute, to lead Saint Martin’s to a 2-1 win over Central Washington University in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener Saturday at the CWU Soccer Field.

The Wildcats got on the board early as Hannah Bridges scored off a cross just 1:46 into the match. But a wild second half that included a combined 28 shots and six yellow cards would end in the Saints’ favor.

Saint Martin’s was finally able to convert in the 84th minute when Jensen took a cross from Julianna Sackeyfio and put it past the Wildcat keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

Just five and a half minutes later, with only 33 seconds on the clock, Jensen once again found the back of the net following a free kick from 20 yards out that bounce of the CWU goalie for the win.

“We gave the ball away early and CWU scored on a nice bit of work. We fought our way through the rest of the first half. In the second half we had better chances and in the final 12 minutes or so we were quite effective going to goal,” said head coach Rob Walker.

The Saints outshot the Wildcats 19-18 in the game, including a 16-12 advantage in the second half. Jensen took six shots on the day while Kayci Donatelli had five and Jessica Wilson had four. Ashley Engel made eight saves in her winning effort in goal. Saint Martin's snapped Central Washington's five-game unbeaten streak with its come-from-behind victory. “Julianna Sackeyfio and Kayci Donatelli played well in midfield today, while Jill Jensen was part of making things happen which is good. Cayla Dixon played very well in the back, especially in the second half. Overall, I feel really good about the performance today,” said Walker.

The Saints are now 3-4-0 on the season, 1-0-0 in conference while Central falls to 3-2-2 overall, 0-1-0 in the GNAC.

SMU returns home for a match Monday against No. 4 Seattle Pacific, who was upset by Western Washington Saturday and is now 6-1-1 on the season.
