Women’s Soccer: Saints battle but lose to Falcons
September 22, 2008
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s held off No. 4 Seattle
Pacific for nearly the entire game but the Falcons found the net in the
79th minute and went on the beat the Saints 1-0 Monday afternoon at the
Regional Athletic Complex.
The ball bounced around before it was sent out to
Meredith Teague. Teague passed it off to Shannon Oakes who was right in
front of the goal and able to put it in.
Seattle Pacific outshot Saint Martin’s 22-5,
including 14 in the first half. SPU had their chances early in the game
as Janae Goday hit a bullet that ricocheted off the cross bar back into
play where Jocelyn Charette launched it at the net only to have it too
hit the cross bar, this time going out of play.
The Saints also had a couple of great scoring
opportunities in the game including a shot by Ashley Biral on which SPU
keeper Jesslyn Rahm made a diving save. Biral had three of SMU’s five
shots in the game.
“SPU is a great side and they were unlucky to be
saved by the goal post and cross bar in the first half on several
occasions. Our best opportunities were in the second half and I thought
we showed a bit of our best soccer during that time,” said head coach
Rob Walker.
Ashley Engel spent the entire game in goal for the
Saints and had 10 saves before surrendering the winning goal.
“Cayla Dixon and Jessica Wilson were really strong
in the back today. SPU played with a lot of poise and skill and are
truly a top-class team,” said Walker.
With the loss the Saints drop to 1-1 in conference
play, 3-5 overall. The Falcons are now 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC.
Saint Martin’s will play at home again this Thursday
against Western Oregon at 3pm.
