Position title: Business Analyst
Reports to: Associate Vice President of Integrated
Subject matter expert for the Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP). The position will utilize knowledge of data relationships in the systems to design data retrieval, reporting and management systems to meet the University’s business needs. The position will also be key in the definition of the system interfaces between the ERP and other administrative systems utilized by the University. The Business Analyst also works with user functions to define processes and procedures that effectively use the system resources. Primary areas of focus in the analysis include feasibility studies, costs, and user needs. The position collaborates with other members of the team to design in-house data processing systems or subsystems, develops testing criteria, and establishes documentation to support the new and existing systems. Providing technical support and troubleshooting in areas of expertise are also key components of the position. May serve as a project leader or be assigned to the more complex projects.
Mission and strategic plan
This position supports the efforts of SMU staff and faculty in their
efforts to increase enrollment, advise students, and improve alumni
relationships. This will be accomplished through focused business
process analysis, information management and information analysis.
Level of supervision and supervisory responsibility
General Supervision: The employee carries out recurring assignments without
specific instruction. The supervisor intercedes and provides direction for only
new or unusual problems which involve deviations from normal policies,
procedures and work methods. The employee’s work is reviewed upon completion and
only periodically to verify compliance with policies and procedures.
Responsibilities and essential functions
- Collaborate with MIS team and functional groups to establish and document
processes and best practices in enterprise systems, including the student
information systems. Areas of emphasis include data entry consistency and

to the ERP system or integration points to other key University systems.
- Document and diagram business processes and solutions throughout the
University. Develop and maintain up-to-date documentation in the University's

new functionality. Diagnose and resolve problems occurring in multiple software
and database platforms.

of University systems and communicate data standards.
- As a member of the MIS staff, assists in planning and setting policies and
procedures for the department.

knowledge of Ellucian PowerCAMPUS, Ellucian Self-Service, and other applications
and skills needed to perform duties.
