Jan Berney
Director, Counseling
Saint Martin's University |
|
“Jan Berney is The Spirit. She has taken on
a big role as Director of the Counseling and Wellness center,
and with all the commotion of incoming freshmen, the loss of a
student, and various other issues we have already faced this
year, I feel she has responded well and been a huge support for
our community. I know the day we heard about Josh she stayed
late and opened up the counseling center and reflection room for
those who wanted support. She is an integral part of our
community, and someone who really makes a difference in people’s
lives.” Congratulations Jan!!! |

Laura Miller
Director, Financial Aid
Saint Martin's University
|
|
Laura Miller has turned the Financial Aid
office around. Laura not only runs the office very smoothly, she
also is committed and involved in the day to day operations.
Laura with the assistance of her staff was instrumental in
ensuring that all of the incoming freshman and transfer students
that were ready had their awards in mid February, which put
Saint Martin’s ahead of the game compared to other local
colleges. When Laura first became director she spent so much
time here after hours to get the all the kinks worked out. Laura
is a very important part of Saint Martin’s University.
Congratulations Laura!!! |

Kellen Willis
Admissions Counselor
Saint Martin's University |
|
"Kellen has gone far beyond the duties of an
Admissions Counselor. He personally took student groups to
several of our away basketball games. He organized and marketed
the trips and assisted all in representing our teams with
enthusiasm and spirit. We typically have not had the staffing to
support away games and this was highly rated by the students. He
also was our personal cheerleader at all the home games, sitting
in the student section, dressing up and encouraging students to
cheer and don the appropriate apparel! Kellen personally painted
and posted the team support signs at each game. School spirit
has traditionally not been where it should be at a school our
size and contributes to retention, a sense of belonging and
community building. Kellen has also been an active participant
in our Intramural Program, again spending his personal time,
evenings and weekends to participate directly with the students
as well as support and encourage them. Again, these activities
may not immediately draw attention, but students were delighted
to have a staff person engage with them so directly and
constantly applauded Killen’s involvement. He is not highly
visible and is one of the quiet but significant participants in
the SMU community." Congratulations Kellen!!! |

Carl Lew

“If there is anyone who embodies the
Benedictine values of Saint Martin’s, it’s Carl. He is kind,
patient and considerate, and keeps a positive attitude at all
times. Despite a daunting backlog of work, Carl is happy to take
time from his busy schedule to help people when they need it.
Working in technology, which can sometimes be frustrating for
people, Carl has a calming presence and understanding
personality. Aside from being a Web guru, he is an outstanding
coworker. He is committed to the University and its ideals, and

“Ken is outside working on the grounds no
matter what the weather, rain, shine, snow or sleet. He doesn’t
allow the bad weather to damper his enthusiasm or attitude. He
is always positive and is always looking for ways to improve the
appearance of our grounds. His recent dedication on the new
outside gathering area was truly inspiring. He also volunteers
many hours for the men’s baseball team and his love for the game
and our students is very apparent. His hard work and
never-ending dedication to SMU make him the perfect candidate
for this month’s spirit award.” Congratulations Ken!!! |

Brenda Lund
Executive Assistant to the President
Saint Martin's University |
|
Brenda is already well known for effectively
supporting the Board of Trustees and Dr. Astolfi in their work
on behalf of the University. Over the past several months, she
has also assisted the Presidential Search Committee in its task
of identifying a new leader for the institution.
However, it is Brenda’s example of the
Benedictine spirit for which she is honored this month. One of
her nominators said, “I have often seen her show great kindness
towards her co-workers, helping out in areas outside of the
realm of work related issues.” Another said, “Brenda went out of
her area of responsibility to help me, a student in my time of
need.” Congratulations Brenda!!!

Jessica Runions

“I would like to nominate Jessica because
she shows students so much kindness while doing her job. She is
an upbeat person who takes pride in what she does. And, she
treats each person she serves as if they were a V.I.P.”
“Her spirit is contagious and I can’t help
but smile every time I talk to her. No matter what, she has a
smile on her face and a positive attitude. The best part about
Jessica is that you really can tell she cares about this school,
her job, and most of all the students here at Saint Martin’s.
Jessica is such a wonderful asset to the Saint Martin’s
community!” Congratulations Jessica!!!

Clara Church
Help Desk Coordinator
Saint Martin's University |
|
“In the eyes of those who call the “help
desk”, Clara Church is the IT department. When she answers the
“help desk” phone she actually helps you. And she does it with a
smile in her voice. And, if you happen to be “not so savvy
computer wise” she will go to your office after she has tried
valiantly to help you over the phone. She’s always pleasant and
accurate. If she isn’t sure about the situation you are having,
she will research the problem and call you back quickly. If she
doesn’t know the answer, she tells you that and then sends a
technician. Clara makes calling the “help desk” a fun
experience.” Congratulations Clara!!!

Carla Jacobs
Administrative Assistant III
College of Education |
|
“I'd like to nominate Carla Jacobs,
assistant to Ed. College, for her tireless work on the TEAC
visit, hours and hours of overtime! Plus she is the center
around which the students and faculty revolve and survive.”
“Carla has gone above and beyond for years.
The Spirit of St Benedict has become such a part of her that it
is just assumed and taken for granted. She is the anchor of the
Education department, the get it done gal, the handholder, and
the voice of humor. She serves both students and faculty, and
makes it seem effortless.” Congratulations Carla!!!

Sandy
Brandt
Administrative Assistant III
Saint Martin's University |
|
“Sandy always has a smile and an ear to
listen. In this highly competitive academic field many of our
students over the years have voiced that their contact with
Sandy swayed them to choose the program at Saint Martin's over
other universities. She is a wealth of information. Sandy most
often has the answer the students are looking for and if not
will find out and contact them quickly. Sandy's friendly face is
often the first one the students see as they come for their
evening classes after a long day of work. They love to stop in
and say hi to her and get the answers to their questions. She is
the heart and soul of the Mac program keeping everything
organized and more importantly everyone connected. I can't think
of anyone who more shows the spirit of SMU.”
Congratulations Sandy!!!

Wendy Goodwin
Technology Support Specialist
Saint Martin's University |

“Wendy is a hard-working, dedicated person
that exemplifies the true Benedictine spirit by her words, but
more importantly by her actions. She is one of those people that
works behind the scenes making sure that everything runs
smoothly so that we can do our jobs better. Wendy is often under
a deadline to complete some of her projects, but is always kind,
patient, and gracious when asked to help solve a problem. She
solves difficult PowerCampus problems with a smile and always
asks if there is anything else she can do. Wendy is a delight to
work with and is truly deserving of this recognition.”

Jon Noski
Operations Assistant
Norman Worthington Conference Center |
|
“It is a privilege to nominate Jon Noski for
the Spirit Award. As an assistant supervisor, student, father,
husband, and good son; Jon exemplifies the Benedictine way in
all aspects of his life while providing front-line customer
service at the Norman Worthington Conference Center. He
routinely anticipates desires before they are asked. He always
displays an attitude of flexibility and accommodation when a
request has been made. He is always with a smile, is an active
listener, and ready to assist. He thinks well on his feet and is
a problem solver while assisting faculty, staff, students, and
the outside community to facilitate positive and memorable event
outcomes. Jon serves as the main point of contact for the
international student employee community and does an outstanding
job training and providing them with audio-visual and
conferencing skills. His patient and nurturing disposition also
provides them with the life skills they will need once they
leave the university. Our return customers always ask
enthusiastically for Jon when they are on the premises or
inquire whether or not he will be working their event. This
alone is testament to the great job that he does and how he has
made the Norman Worthington Conference Center a special place
for all who visit Saint Martin's University. ”

Sarah Clemons
Director of Campus Life
Saint Martin's University |
|
"Sarah Clemons, the Director of Campus Life, is a person who has
been on campus with the Spirit of Saint Martin’s. She is the
consummate professional, getting things done on time, no
questions asked and with a smile on her face. She has done a
great job in planning and executing an orientation program, in
which incoming students and their parents enjoy and help them
feel what the Saint Martin’s community is all about. When I have
worked collaboratively with Sarah on different committees, her
personality, combined with her smile and humor, makes everyone
feel at ease and yet helps keep the group focused. You can
genuinely tell that Sarah has a passion to help the students
here at SMU and help mentor them to help them reach their full
potential. It is because of people like Sarah that Saint
Martin’s is at where it is today." Congratulations
Sarah!!!

John "Joe" Dowd
Sodexho |

“ Joe, whose main job is keeping the dining
room clean, managing the dish racks and working catering events,
is a ray of sunshine to everyone. Joe always greets everyone he
encounters with a smile and a friendly hello. He is actively
involved with student activities and the students on a daily
basis. He takes the time to listen to whomever he encounters and
lend a helping hand whether it is students, faculty, or guests
of Saint Martin’s. When he asks how you are doing he actually
cares and listens. He is one of the quiet, gentle souls who make
Saint Martin’s a special place to be and a true “home” to our
students". Congratulations Joe!!!
