English as a second language program
Saint Martin's University (SMU) offers an intensive ESL program for students
who are academically qualified to attend SMU, but lack the required TOEFL
score. The program offers college preparatory courses for students from the
beginning to advanced level. Students applying to the intensive ESL program
must meet all Saint Martin's University admission requirements with the
exception of the TOEFL score.
Students
accepted to the intensive ESL program are granted conditional admission to
the University. They are expected to complete their ESL study within an 18
month period. Any extension beyond 18 months will require special permission
from the program director.
Students who have achieved TOEFL scores between 480 and 524 enter with
concurrent status and are allowed to enroll in one or two regular courses in
addition to ESL courses. A student will be fully enrolled in regular courses
once a 525 or better TOEFL score has been achieved.
Also note that our ESL program has a "late start" spring semester in order
to match better with Asian academic calendars.
