Program mission statement
The Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) Program is designed to provide
engineering and science graduates with specialized technical knowledge
oriented toward professional engineering practice in their field of interest
within civil engineering. The program provides an opportunity to our
undergraduate students as well as local professionals in Olympia-Tacoma area
to acquire advanced degree (master degree). The MCE program is in line with
the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) future goal (year 2025) of
BOK (Body of Knowledge), requiring a master degree or equivalent educational
credit for practicing civil engineering. For our undergraduate students, it
will be in fast track when they combine the MCE and BSCE degree. Another
mission of the program was to prepare students to continue their engineering
education into higher level and reinforce their knowledge for professional
licensure.
Program goals, objectives and outcomes
Knowledge
- The program includes advanced courses in four specialty areas in
civil engineering: structural engineering, transportation engineering,
environmental engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Additional
courses in construction management are encouraged.
- The courses in the MCE program are practice-oriented and designed to
be an extension of the specialty area specialization begun with the
undergraduate civil engineering senior electives.
- With the necessary prerequisites, senior SMU undergraduate students
can take master level courses as senior electives and begin to
specialize their choice of specific disciplines in civil engineering
practice.
Skills
- Students will emerge with enhanced engineering analysis and
design skills according to his or her professional objectives.
- With the necessary prerequisites, senior SMU undergraduate
students can take master level courses as senior electives and begin
to specialize specific skills in their choice of civil engineering
discipline.
