Provost message
On
behalf of the faculty, staff and administrators, I want to welcome you
to Saint Martin's University. You are joining a community of faculty and
staff dedicated to helping you achieve your academic and professional
goals.
Saint Martin's University is strongly influenced by the spirit of the
Benedictine monks who established the institution over a hundred years
ago, and who have continued to nurture this warm and caring community.
Over your time here, you will find many opportunities to work closely
with faculty, staff and fellow students on a regular basis. Education at
Saint Martin's takes place not only through formal classroom
instruction, but also in countless other ways: by participation in
curricular and co-curricular activities, informal conversations with
faculty and fellow students, our athletic and intramural sports
programs, residence hall activities, travel opportunities, and
interaction with a diverse student body from all parts of the world.
Saint Martin's provides a unique educational experience. You are joining
a community of teachers and scholars respectful of different peoples and
cultures, open to discussing ideas both traditional and new. In addition
to mastering the content of the area you study, you will be encouraged
to practice critical thinking, to examine your own values and to
understand diverse viewpoints. This environment enriches the college
experience, and helps you acquire a combination of knowledge and still
essential to lifelong intellectual and personal growth and effective
membership in the increasingly global 21st century environment.
My role here involves general oversight of the academic functions of
Saint Martin's University. If I can be of assistance to you, please feel
free to contact me at the office. My staff and I are committed to doing
our best to serve your needs and interests.
Sincerely,
Joseph Bessie, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
