The 27th Annual Spiritual Life Institute

The Heart in a Heartless World:
Religion, Suffering, and the Problem of Evil

June 22-26, 2009

For over twenty-five years, the Religious Studies Department at Saint Martin’s University has offered a unique and flexible Christian theology program that explores the spirituality of today’s world. Each summer, renowned theologians, religious scholars, and advocates for social justice share their thoughts and experiences with participants in order to inspire awareness, challenge preconceived notions, and shed light upon the spiritual journey.

The Spiritual Life Institute is a five-day intensive learning program in which participants:

Dialogue with scholars and practitioners who are active in theological reflection, spiritual formation and peace and justice throughout the world;

Engage with educators who creatively share their experience, wisdom, and vision; and

Reflect on emerging expressions of spirituality and faith that broaden the possibilities for personal and social transformation.

Who Can Benefit from the Spiritual Life Institute?

  • Individuals seeking personal enrichment and spiritual growth
  • Clergy and lay women and men engaged in professional ministry
  • Saint Martin's University students, employees and faculty
